During the Age of Discovery, Portugal used its strategic position to become one of the world’s great seafaring nations, discovering new worlds and forging new trade routes to Africa, Brazil, India, and Asia.  And through the successes of explorers such as Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, and Ferdinand Magellan, Portugal realized vast wealth and riches as evidenced in the grand palaces, monasteries and churches that were filled with gold brought back from their journeys.

Our journey begins with three nights in PORTO, Portugal’s second largest city.  Set along the banks of the scenic Douro River, Porto’s charm can be found in its narrow cobblestone streets, ornately decorated churches and palaces, and traditional "rabelo" boats, which were once used to deliver port wine from the Douro Valley.  Once you visit, you’ll come to realize that Porto is “traditional” Portugal at its finest.

Daily Itinerary & Inclusions
Located about 90 miles north of Lisbon, Fatima is one of the most important catholic shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary.  Fatima’s fame is due to the Apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary that appeared to three shepherd children; Lucia dos Santos and her two younger cousins, Francisco and Jacinta. Between May and October of 1917, the three children witnessed several apparitions. The last one, on October 13, was confirmed as a miracle witnessed by 60,000 people known in the catholic world as “the day the sun danced”.

Fatima now attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world, particularly on the pilgrimage days in May and October.  The pilgrims gather in an enormous plaza where a little chapel was built and where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to the children. Around the plaza are a considerable number of shops and stalls selling various religious articles. On the far side of the plaza rises the great basilica with a central tower over 200 feet high.  In the basilica are the tombs of the three visionaries. Siblings Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who died in 1919 and 1920 respectively, and Lucia dos Santos, who died in 2005.

Following our magical stay in Porto, we’ll travel south along Portugal’s “Gold Coast”
to LISBON, the nations capital.  Many who have visited describe Lisbon as
vibrant and charismatic.  In fact, Lisbon is a city that effortlessly blends its
traditional heritage with striking modernism, and is constantly recognized
as one of the greatest cities in the world.  Wander through the bright
limestone cobbled streets to the viewpoints at the top of the seven hills on
which Lisbon is built. You’ll emerge looking across the terra cotta-roofed
houses which ramble down towards the mouth of the Tagus River.  Be sure
to stop along the way for a delicious pastel de nata (custard-filled pastry) and
bica (espresso) under the shade of an umbrella at one of the outdoor kiosk cafés.
